Rex Munyao a 29 year old died on June 20th while attending on going protests against the Finance Bill 2024 which they have rejected following current high cost of living.
News of his death spread widely on social media raising more issues for the govt after it was reported that an officer from the an anti-riot police shot him on the left thigh.
Rex’s mother Jillian Munyau on Friday morning addressed the media at the City Mortuary where her son’s body was taken, confirming that Rex was fatally shot on his left thigh, then was rushed to Bliss Medical Centre, located at Archives in CBD, for medical care, where he sadly passed on.
“His friend called me when the incident happened, and when I left home and reached CBD around 8PM, he had already passed on,” Ms. Munyau says.
Police refuse to assist
Still on the same Ms Munyau went on to reveal that Rex’s friends claim the killer shot was intended, as it was aimed at a place they had taken hiding after a teargas canister exploded where they had previously been standing.
With the police refusing to help Rex, he then over bled and by the time he got to hospital, the doctor’s couldn’t do much.
He lost a lot of blood before he was rushed to the medical facility. His friends say police declined to assist them in transporting Rex to a hospital for proper emergency care, Ms. Munyau has told the media. She went on.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has however launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Rex Kanyike Masai.
While addressing the matter, they also commended protesters for remaining peaceful during the protests saying;
The authority calls for continued restraint by the police and calls on members of the public to be peaceful and conduct themselves within the confines of the law.
