Kenyan artist Lil Maina has opened up on how he reacted the very first time when he received news of the demise of his grandpa babu.
Lil Maina openly revealed that at the first time he never really reacted, as he couldn’t believe that his grandfather had passed on. As grief hovered over him like a heavy cloud, Lil Maina found a way to keep it at bay. He didn’t cry; he didn’t rage.
“It was 4 p.m.; my cousin Akakuja akaniambia Babu left us. I was like, Acha ufala, Hiyo, process, mimi processing all that was unbelievable. I wasn’t crying or anything; I was just chilling and processing the whole thing.” Lil Maina shared.
Lil Maina explained further, saying that the reason he opted not to fundraise for his grandpa Babu was because his grandfather was not one who liked to be helped and had even made peace that if they were struggling they would have just proceeded and handled matters the way they are without seeking for public help despite them being in need of money. “We had the option of doing like the fundraising thing, then I was like, No, reason, I wasn’t comfortable, I didn’t want to do so if we were struggling, we struggle because babu angedie hivo juu yeye si mtu wa kusaidiwa saidiwa hivo ndio niliona.”

It hit him when everything went quiet, admitting that it was when he realized he was very lost because he wasn’t giving himself time to grieve and heal and that affected him a great deal. Lil Maina’s urge to keep things going and ignoring what just happened is what hurt him the most.
Fast forward: Lil Maina decided to mark the 20th’s of every month from April in order to grieve the death of his grandpa; he even admitted that he started breaking down crying severely every 20th of every month because reality had hit him that Babu was no more. This is all to help honour his late loving grandpa who was very dear to him and loved by many.
