Nairobi Former Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has reacted to Kenyan-born athlete Winfred Mutile Yavi winning a Gold medal for Bahrain despite her being Kenyan.
Yavi, who is now representing Bahrain, clinched the gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, setting a new Olympic record, while her motherland, Kenya, took 3rd place, bagging a bronze.
Mike Sonko had something to say about it, sharing his disappointment on the Kenyan government for having failed to treat the athletes well, who have now come back to haunt them.
“Yavi Mutile (Kamba from Makueni running for Bahrain) has come back to hunt Kenya. It is a lesson, I have always asked the government to take good care of their athletes. Leo Tumenyorosha na Mutile in the 3000m run tumepata bronze.” Mike Sonko wrote on his Twitter page.

Why Yavi switched allegiance
Yavi switched her allegiance to Bahrain at the age of 15, because of the fierce competition for limited spots on the national team, which forced her to make a difficult decision.
