Kimani Ichung’wa Asserts that TikTok Be Regulated Instead of Banning it

Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wa has asked that TikTok be regulated instead of resorting to completely banning it.

According to him, banning the app could mess up a lot of other people’s careers, as many of them depend on TikTok to make a living out of it.

He kept on saying that even he was in those apps, and they should consider regulating them.

“We cannot, as a house, ban any apps… Hon. Speaker, we should look at ways to restrict these apps. the use of these apps, how we regulate the age group that will be using these apps, etc.

How the communication authority of Kenya and ICT will be able to regulate the content that is being uploaded for viewership to be able to see.”

He dismissed anything to do with banning the apps rather than considering finding other relevant ways that can be used so that they don’t jeopardize people’s careers. He said that they can even go on to the point of involving Government authorities who may step in and advise people how they can use the apps in a more decent way.

TikTok is an online app that provides users with entertaining videos. And this agenda of banning the app came up after news spread all over that at midnight people were misusing the app by posting viewer description content that can’t be viewed by people under the age of 18. Word has it that quite a number of people, the majority of them females, would go live and showcase their bodies without having clothes on, asking if one was interested in seeing her without paying them something small.

Yesterday, a Kenyan CEO submitted a petition to Parliament seeking to have the popular social media application TikTok banned in Kenya.

The petitioner, who is the Bridget Connect Consultancy CEO, Bob Ndolo, argues that the explicit content in TikTok promotes violence (sex), hate speech, and vulgarity, which undermine the cultural and religious values of Kenya.
