Social influencer Joe Muchiri paid a visit to his friend, Joseph “Jowie” Irungu, at Kamiti Maximum Prison on Tuesday, August 13. Irungu is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
Muchiri shared insights into Irungu’s life behind bars, revealing how the convicted murderer is adjusting to prison life five months after his death sentence was handed down.
”Kijana ako sawa. Anapambana tu,” he stated.

Jowie’s Conviction and Appeal
Irungu was found guilty of murdering Monica Kimani in her Nairobi apartment in 2018. The court sentenced him to death, a ruling he subsequently appealed. In his appeal, Irungu argued that the death penalty violates his constitutional rights, claiming it is a cruel and inhuman form of punishment.
Justice Nzioka highlighted that in addition to life imprisonment and jail terms, the death penalty remains a legal recourse for serious offences.
But, while ruling out the life imprisonment and a fixed jail sentence, Nzioka referenced a court precedent indicating that life imprisonment equates to 30 years, considering remission.
“We are all aware of the jurisprudence on life imprisonment where one of the courts has said it is unconstitutional and the latest decision which I have quoted in this matter says life imprisonment is 30 years…,” she explained.
In his early years, Jowie Irungu was a soldier; and his strength and courage while getting his verdict proved that he wasn’t shocked upon receiving it.
