Khalif Kairo and Boniface Mwangi clash over expected protests as Kenyans pick sides

Published on

Businessman Khalif Kairo has ignited a public debate after urging Kenyan youth to refrain from participating in ongoing street protests. In a social media video, Kairo argued that many of the protesters’ demands have already been met by the government, citing the withdrawal of the finance bill and the resignation of the Inspector General of Police. He also highlighted President Ruto’s pledge to reinstate the Kazi Mtaani program.

Kairo expressed concerns about potential violence and economic repercussions associated with the protests, particularly for businesses operating in Nairobi’s central business district. He questioned the efficacy of police efforts to control the situation and contended that removing President Ruto from office would not necessarily address the nation’s underlying problems.

Kairo vs Mwangi

However, human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has adopted a contrasting stance. Mwangi insists that the protests are crucial to demanding accountability from the government for the deaths of previous protesters. He criticized President Ruto for failing to publicly apologize to the victims’ families and emphasized the need for concrete actions to address these fatalities.

Kairo’s position has drawn both support and criticism, with many questioning his stance given his previous public comments. Mwangi’s call for continued protests has resonated with those seeking justice for the victims and demanding greater government accountability.

The differing perspectives of Kairo and Mwangi underscore the deep divisions within Kenyan society regarding the ongoing protests and the government’s response. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how these differing viewpoints will shape the course of the protests and the nation’s political landscape.
