Kenya Met warns Kenyans to brace for heavy weekend rains and temperature fluctuations

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert, warning Kenyans across the country to expect rainfall and varying temperatures over the weekend.

Five regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Coast, are expected to experience rainfall, ranging from moderate to heavy showers. Counties like Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi will likely receive moderate rainfall, while coastal counties can anticipate lighter showers.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is predicted in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.  

Moderate rainfall is expected in the Eastern Lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, beginning in the afternoon after sunny mornings.

The rest of the country will likely experience dry weather with sunny intervals. Counties like Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to have intense sunshine.

Temperature Advisory

The weather department has also issued a temperature advisory, particularly for the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where very cold night temperatures are expected. Nighttime temperatures in these counties could drop as low as 6°C, while other regions like the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin may experience temperatures around 11°C.

High daytime temperatures are predicted in some parts of the country, including Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and the coastal counties.
