Kenyan lawmakers approved a motion to deploy the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in support of police in response to widespread protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024. The decision came after a closed-door session of Parliament.

The Defence Council, led by Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, requested the deployment. This council includes military leadership figures. Kenya’s constitution requires parliamentary approval for KDF deployment within the country.

Soldiers will be sent to areas experiencing violent protests and destruction of critical infrastructure. Their mission is to assist the National Police Service in restoring order.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula acknowledged the ongoing national debate about the Finance Bill and the economic situation. He praised young people for leading the discussion but emphasized the need for peaceful and legal methods of protest.

Wetangula condemned the violence, disrespect for the law, and damage to property during the protests, including the attack on Parliament.
