Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a journalist with K24 TV, has revealed that her life is in danger after receiving death threats. Wanjeri was shot three times on the thigh while covering the anti-Finance Bill protests led by Gen Z activists in Nakuru. The protests, which took place across Kenya, have seen heightened tensions between demonstrators and law enforcement.

Wanjeri stated that she has received threatening phone calls from unknown individuals, whom she suspects are connected to the shooting. She believes these calls are meant to intimidate her into dropping the case. “It is true that there might be someone targeting me. How can I get the courage to come out of my house as a woman when someone you don’t know calls you, and even worse, they know your family?” she shared.

The journalist admitted that she has considered withdrawing from the case due to the threats but has decided to continue seeking justice with the support of her colleagues. “I have contemplated even bolting out of this case, because maybe that will make them stop following me. I want to commend the officials of our association and the chairperson because they have been pushing for this case even when I was in the hospital, doing follow-ups even with the IPOA,” she revealed. 

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo condemned the threats against Wanjeri, calling for a thorough investigation. “This should be investigated. The media should not be intimidated, especially a victim of police brutality,” Odhiambo asserted.

Wanjeri was covering the protests in Nakuru’s Central Business District when she was shot, alongside another journalist who also sustained critical injuries. Witnesses reported seeing Wanjeri crawling on the ground in pain, clutching her leg.

The incident has sparked outrage among civil rights groups, who have condemned the attack and called for greater protection for journalists. The Media Owners Association also issued a statement urging the government to ensure journalists can work without fear. “We call on the government to collaborate with media stakeholders to create an enabling environment for journalists to carry out their duties without fear of reprisals,” the association said.

As investigations continue, there is growing pressure on authorities to ensure that those responsible for the shooting and subsequent threats against Wanjeri are brought to justice.
