‘I don’t want it’- Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna rejects salary increment

Published on

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna has declined a payrise of Ksh 14,000, in the month of July. Several other members of parliament are expected to receive a payrise this month other than the president.

According to Sifuna, having a payrise in the middle of an outrage by Kenyans is quite peculiar as they complain about the taxes and high cost of living.

He took to X (Twitter) to calibrate that he doesn’t fancy the additional payrise, which he did not ask for.

“MPs’ payrise amid chaos” is a bit of outrage hunting @citizentvkenya . Let’s be clear what we are talking about here. The SRC is proposing to add me 14k on my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective I pay close to 300k in income tax every month. I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae,” Sifuna wrote.

Members of the National Assembly and the Senate will take Sh739,600 as gross salary, up from Sh725,502.

Sifuna’s act has received numerous reactions from netizens, most of whom have praised him for his philanthropic act.

He was among the members of parliament who were against the finance bill. He was also spotted during the protests admonishing the police officers not to use live bullets on peaceful protestors.`
