This expansion will leverage advanced AI models and satellite imagery to provide real-time data on wildfire locations, aiding both the public and firefighting teams.

Originally launched in the United States, Google’s wildfire tracking tool has already proven invaluable, offering up-to-date information through Google Search and Maps. The tool helps users see the approximate size and location of wildfires, which is crucial for timely evacuations and efficient emergency responses.

We detect wildfire boundaries using new AI models based on satellite imagery and show their real-time location in Search and Maps,” said Yossi Matias, Google’s Vice President of Engineering and Crisis Response Lead.

The expansion of this tool is timely, as wildfires have become more frequent and severe due to climate change. According to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the rate of wildfires will become more frequent and more intense as global temperatures continues to rise as a result of human activities

By including countries like Kenya, Google aims to provide critical support in regions that are particularly vulnerable to wildfire threats. The tool’s availability in these new regions is expected to significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of wildfire response efforts, potentially saving lives and reducing damage.

Additionally, Google’s initiative includes partnerships with local agencies to ensure the information is accessible and actionable. This move underscores the company’s commitment to using its technological prowess to address some of the most pressing challenges posed by climate change.

Overall, this expansion represents a major step forward in global disaster preparedness and response as Africa tops with 65%, leveraging cutting-edge AI to make communities safer and more resilient in the face of natural disasters
