Fena Gitu has opened up about how she struggled and received backlash with music, especially when she was an upcoming artist.
In an interview with the Pov podcast, Fena opened up on having encountered a guy, who told her that singing English songs wouldn’t take her far, especially in the Kenyan industry.
“I have had a tough come-up, and it is still a struggle. I remember someone prominent—let me not say Choma, but someone prominent—who told me that kuimba na English hakuna mahali itakupeleka kwa hii industry ya kenya, anza kuimba na kiswahili.
I just said ‘noted with thanks’ but he came to realize that kuimba English ilinifungulia njia in other ways and I have never forgotten since.”
She wen on saying that one of the biggest lesson she has learnt throughout her music years is to have a tough resilient skin in the industry and not force her music on anyone. She is now focused on building the community that keeps on supporting her and has stopped chasing numbers which has let her down in the long run.
Fena Gitu rose through her hit single “Doing Her Thing Tho”. which was a success and impelled her into the spotlight. The single was an enormous achievement and a defining moment in her career. Fena has since delivered a few other well-known singles and collaborations with other big artists in the industry.
