Details on why Kagame smoothly won Rwanda elections to earn a 4th term as president

Published on

Paul Kagame is set for a fourth term as Rwanda’s president after the electoral authorities declared him the winner of the Rwanda presidential election. He won the elections after garnering 99.15 per cent of the votes.

Kagame has won more than 93% of the vote at each of the three previous elections. Eight candidates had applied to run against him, but only two were retained in the final list validated by the electoral commission.

His closest challenger, Habineza Frank had 38,301 votes while Mfayimana Philippe is last with 22,753.

Rwandans have decided to continue giving power to president Paul Kagame despite him ruling for several years.

The outcome was never in doubt, with Kagame accused of muzzling the opposition and several prominent critics barred from the race.

Kagame liberates Rwanda

Paul Kagame is a former Rwandan military leader; who turned to be a politician. He led the Rwandan Patriot Front (RPF) to defeat Hutu extremist forces and ended the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Kagame led a force of 10,000–14,000 RPF soldiers against the Hutu forces perpetrating the genocide.

By eschewing direct assaults and utilizing protracted artillery attacks on enemy strongholds, Kagame’s forces were able to minimize casualties and retake Kigali in early July.

Kagame’s actions were hailed as heroic as they liberated the country. In the year 2000, he became president of Rwanda. He is yet to lose an election ever since his election as president.
