Many Kenyans were not familiar with the name “Cherera” while they awaited the results of the general elections held on August 9th. Surprisingly, she would rise to fame after rejecting the declared election results. William Ruto was proclaimed the fifth President-elect by the country’s returning officer Wafula Chebukati. At Kenya’s electoral body, the IEBC, Juliana Cherera will no longer be serving citizens and has stated that she is vacating office.

After leading three other commissioners, Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyaganya, in disowning the 2022 Kenyan general election results, given out by Chair Wafula Chebukati, describing them as being of a “opaque character,” she became a prominent figure in Kenya in after the August elections.Kenyans were outraged by this, especially those who supported the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a focus on Geography and Kiswahili from Kenyatta University, and she also holds a Master of Education in Leadership and Educational Management from KEMU. At the Kenya Institute of Management, she also studied project management at the Kenya School of Government’s Strategic Leadership and Development Program, and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) at KNEC.She was suspended from her position by President Ruto a few days before to her resignation, which was accepted by the Kenya Devolution Support Program Committee.

,“It is with immense woe that today I tender my resignation as
commissioner and vice chairperson of the IEBC. Since joining the
commission, I have dispensed my duties diligently, meticulously, and
put up a spirited effort in helping IEBC deal with corporate
governance issues under very difficult circumstances,’ stated Cherera

Days after Ruto’s probation committee was established, she becomes the second IEBC commissioner to resign.Cherera continued by claiming that despite doing all in her power to support the electoral commission, she has been misunderstood. She explained that although all of her acts were taken in good faith, they were tragically misconstrued and misunderstood. She continued by saying that she had carefully considered the present situation at the commission and had decided to leave after speaking with her family and attorneys.
