Francis Ogolla Biography
President William Ruto elevated Lieutenant General Francis Omondi Ogolla to full General and appointed him the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) on April 28th last year.
General Ogolla assumes the role of the military’s top leader and the President’s principal military advisor.
Following the Rotation System
This appointment adheres to the “Tonje Rules” established by former Chief of Staff General Daudi Tonje. These rules ensure a rotating leadership structure, providing equal opportunities for the Army, Navy, and Air Force to head the Kenyan military. General Kibochi, the previous CDF, came from the Army, succeeding General Mwathethe from the Navy. This system promotes fairness and a balanced approach to leadership within the defense forces.

Throughout his service, he earned promotions and tackled demanding assignments. His training as a fighter pilot and instructor with the US Air Force, along with expertise in imagery intelligence, counter-terrorism, and accident investigation, exemplifies his dedication to continuous learning and professional development.

He holds a Diploma in International Studies and Military Science, a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Armed Conflict, and Peace Studies, and a Master of Arts in International Studies. His educational pursuits further demonstrate his well-rounded qualifications for this significant leadership role.
