Bishop Johana, a well-known Akorino preacher, has died at the age of 47. Born Danson Gichuhi, he passed away on August 8th at Nakuru provincial general hospital after a brief illness. His wife, Mary Wanjiku, confirmed the news, explaining that Bishop Johana had been suffering from severe headaches and was diagnosed with meningitis. Despite medical efforts, his condition deteriorated rapidly.
Bishop Johana gained significant attention earlier this year after a video of his controversial healing ritual went viral. The footage, which surfaced in February 2024, showed the Bishop applying anointing oil to a female congregant’s stomach and genital areas during a deliverance session. The video sparked widespread debate and concern, leading many to question the appropriateness and ethics of his methods.
In response to the criticism, Bishop Johana defended his actions in an interview claiming that the woman in the video, identified only as Wanjiru and had sought his help to resolve marital issues after her husband left her and their three children.
He further elaborated, “So when you saw me on the video, I was doing deliverance. I was casting out evil spirits from the woman, and they spoke to me and told me they were from Carol, and Carol had gone to Uganda for witchcraft to attract married men.”
Bishop Johana argued that his intentions were purely to help Wanjiru, and he drew a comparison to the lack of criticism faced by others in less conventional settings. Despite the controversy, he maintained that his actions were meant to provide spiritual support and healing.
