COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli firmly dismissed rumors on Wednesday, October 9, suggesting he might take on the role of Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

Responding to increasing speculation about his potential involvement in national leadership, Atwoli made it clear that he remains focused on his role as an elder and advisor. “I am just an elder and advisor,” he stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
These rumors surfaced amidst shifting political dynamics in Kenya, as various factions vie for power following the National Assembly’s impeachment of Gachagua on October 8.
Atwoli’s stance
Atwoli emphasized that he has no interest in participating in these political developments, urging those spreading rumors to reconsider their claims.
“Those people who are busy peddling rumors under some unknown research document about who should be considered for DP from Western Kenya should stop and forget such unprocessed thoughts,” he said.
Atwoli’s comments come as discussions swirl around the possibility of a Luhya politician being nominated for the Deputy President position if Gachagua’s impeachment is upheld by the Senate.
The matter now moves to the Senate, where a final decision on Gachagua’s removal will be made. If the Senate confirms the impeachment, President Ruto will need to nominate a new Deputy President, intensifying the current political debate.
