Africa day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity and culture that was celebrated on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, and includes all countries that are in Africa as well as around the world.
The organisation was transformed into the African Union on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated every year on 25 May.
The Africa Day which is being observed by all Africans in the continent and the Diaspora, was an opportunity for the AU to pay tribute to the Founding Fathers and Mothers of the OAU/AU for the huge strides they made to achieve sovereignty across the African continent.
Yesterday that was on the 25th, Africa as a whole together with other Countries celebrated the 60th anniversary of the continental union the event took place at Nairobi Kenya in (Africa Union Inter African Bureau For Animal Resources).
An event that saw more than 20 countries showing up and showcasing what they have in their countries, in terms of tradition and culture.
Africa Day symbolises Africa’s unity, commitment to peace, democracy, and economic development together with embracing their culture. It is also an opportune moment for the African Union to reflect on the spirit of pan-Africanism, which connects the past to the present and to the continent’s aspirations for the future.
The celebration of the 60th anniversary Africa day is an opportunity to recognize the role and contribution of the founders of the continental organization and many other Africans on the continent and in the diaspora who have contributed greatly to the political liberation of the continent, and equally, to the socio-economic emancipation of Africa.
Below are some of the interesting facts about Africa as a whole:
Common Language
Africa is linguistically diverse with between 1500-2000 languages spoken in the continent.
But when it comes to understanding each other we all always settle with English and Swahili almost every country in the continent.
Culture and Tradition
When it comes to tradition and customs they don’t differ much as their dressing attires are all almost the same only for a few changes and even with their meals are just prepared almost the same.
The event was graced by the presence of the chairperson of the AU Commission and the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the Union (AU) as well as the Brand ambassadors of different states.
