A trained fine artist from Kenyatta University, one Gekonyo Maina, was inspired by President Uhuru’s and Azimio party leader’s handshake, Raila Odinga hence decided to come up with some fine piece of art and present it during the Azimio’s Manifesto launch that was held In Nyayo stadium on 6th June.
Speaking at the launch, Gekonyo Maina, the artist, said the handshake was a historical moment as it symbolized peace and oneness in the country. The man showed his support to the team by his small gesture in which he had carried different pieces of magnificent art.
“It took me about a month to do it,” continues Gekonyo, “I had actually planned to present it during Madaraka Day on June 1st but that was overtaken by events.”
According to the art, it expressed his human creative skill of imagination and bringing a reality into a visual paint that ought to be appreciated which in this case he had opted to gift Honorable Raila Odinga as a reward for choosing peace after the handshake.
In hand, the artist had the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela’s art which, according to him, symbolized Mandela’s fight towards the liberation of South Africa.
The Stadium was full at capacity, during the launch, among them were artists, dignitaries, political allies, supporters and the party’s flag bearers.
The Handshake, which took place on the 9th of March 2018, came as a surprise to Kenyans when the two leaders came together. According to the two, they were putting their differences aside and uniting through the handshake.
This acted as a public declaration to cease all hostilities and instead find a common ground in the interest of moving the country forward both politically and economically.
At that time, Raila was the party leader of National Super Alliance (NASA) which acted as the opposition side during Kenyatta’s reign. Supporters of the coalition were caught by surprise when they saw Mr. Odinga on the steps of the Presidential office with his Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta.
