Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced the successful recovery of two former journalists, Kimani Mbugua and Eunice Omollo, who were recently treated at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Mental Rescue Centre.

  • His expense was covered by well-wishers
  • Journalist Omollo has also shown immense progress
  • Mike Sonko shared a video on her socials, depicting their recovery

In a statement on October 15, Sonko shared that both Mbugua and Omollo have fully recovered. He has been covering their medical expenses since May, when they were first admitted to the facility.

Kimani Mbugua, a former Citizen TV presenter, was moved to the Mombasa centre after initial treatment at Mathari Hospital. Eunice Omollo, an award-winning Health and Science journalist formerly with NTV, was admitted alongside him.

Sonko to the rescue

A video shared by Sonko captured both journalists speaking at an event commemorating World Mental Health Day. Omollo confidently addressed the audience, embracing her new role as a mental health advocate.

“It’s a profound honour to be here today on this special occasion,” Omollo expressed. “As a journalist, I often observe and report on such events, but today I stand before you as a mental health champion and advocate.”

Omollo shared her personal journey with bipolar disorder, which she has battled for nearly two decades.

“For those who don’t know me, my name is Eunice Atieno Omollo. I am an award-winning journalist with over ten years of experience, but above all, I am a loving mother, devoted daughter, sister, and friend,” she stated.

Battle for health

Kimani Mbugua also opened up about his struggles, revealing a four-year battle with mental health issues. He emphasized that his recovery has progressed significantly since his transfer to the Mombasa facility.

Sonko’s support has been instrumental in their recovery, allowing both journalists to receive continuous treatment.

Sonko is also helping former boxing champion Conjestina in her full recovery. He even offered her a job as a senior in his security team.

The World Mental Health Day event highlighted their courage and resilience, serving as an inspiring example for others facing similar challenges.
