Activist Morara Kebaso calls for fundraising to boost personal security amidst rising threats.

Published on

Kenyan activist David Morara Kebaso is appealing to the public for funds to enhance his security following a recent attack at the Bomas of Kenya. In a post shared on social media, Kebaso stated that due to concerns over his safety, he would not be accountable for how the funds are spent, asking only those who trust him to contribute.

Key Points:

  • Kebaso was assaulted on Friday while attending a public participation forum regarding the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
  • He claims the attack was premeditated, orchestrated by his detractors.
  • The activist emphasises that his security expenditures will remain confidential, stating, “Only send if you TRUST me.”
  • Kebaso has previously experienced harassment and arrests, intensifying his call for increased security.

A Call for Support

In his appeal, Kebaso expressed the need for improved security infrastructure and personnel, following several alarming incidents that have raised concerns about his safety. “I am requesting Kenyans of goodwill to support me in boosting my security infrastructure and manpower,” he wrote. The plea comes in the wake of a violent incident last Friday when he was attacked at the Bomas of Kenya, where he had gone to exercise his democratic rights.

During the chaotic event, Morara faced physical aggression from a group that reportedly threw chairs and attempted to beat him up. Despite the turmoil, he managed to escape with injuries and sought medical attention. He believes that the attack was a coordinated effort to silence him, as he has been vocal in his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government and its leadership.

A pre-planned attack

Kebaso described the events leading up to the attack as a setup, stating that he was denied entry at the gate before being assaulted inside the auditorium. He pointed to the event’s MC, Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang’, suggesting that his displeasure with the crowd’s support for Kebaso triggered the violence. Following the attack, he urged police IG Douglas Kanja and DCI Mohamed Amin to take action against those responsible, yet no arrests have been made.

Background of Activism

Morara Kebaso is known for his staunch opposition to President William Ruto’s administration, frequently accusing the government of failing to deliver on its promises. His commitment to holding the government accountable stems from his belief in civic education and public participation. Kebaso was previously arrested under unclear circumstances related to allegations of cyber harassment, but he insists that fear will not deter him from advocating for the rights and well-being of Kenyans. “My work is crucial in ensuring that the government is held accountable,” he asserted, reaffirming his dedication to his cause despite the risks to his safety.

As public concern grows over the safety of activists like Kebaso, many are now questioning the broader implications of political dissent in Kenya.
