Health CS Deborah Barasa assures Kenyans SHIF will offer free healthcare

Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa has encouraged Kenyans to enroll in the newly launched Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) program. She emphasized that the program is designed to provide affordable healthcare for all citizens.

  • Kenyans remain undivided in the transition from NHIF to SHIF
  • Health CS Deborah has urged Kenyans to join the new program

Speaking at the launch of the Social Health Authority (SHA) in Eldoret, Barasa stated that registered Kenyans will receive free medication at lower-level public health facilities. “By paying 2.75% of your income, you can access services at level 4, 5, and 6 facilities, including coverage for cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases,” she explained.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii echoed Barasa’s sentiments, highlighting the program’s potential to alleviate the financial burden on families with ill members. He also criticized those who oppose important government initiatives.

The launch of SHA marks the end of the decades-old National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). The new program aims to provide more accessible and affordable healthcare to Kenyans nationwide.
