The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory urging Kenyans to prepare for unusual weather conditions between September 17 and September 23. The department’s Director General, David Gikungu, warned of very cold nights and hot days across various regions in the country.

In the advisory, Gikungu noted that residents of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and South-Eastern Lowlands should expect cold nights, with temperatures potentially dropping below 10°C. Countries likely to be affected include Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.

We advise Kenyans living in these areas to brace for chilly nights. Those particularly vulnerable, such as the elderly, young children, and those with health conditions, should take precautions,” Gikungu emphasised.

Additionally, Gikungu highlighted that parts of the South Rift Valley, Coast, Western, and North-Eastern regions will experience hot daytime temperatures, reaching up to 30 °C. Counties like Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, Samburu, and the coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale are expected to be particularly affected by these conditions.

Gikungu explained that the daytime will see sunny intervals, while nights are likely to be partly cloudy. “While temperatures will soar during the day, the nights will bring relief in the form of cooler, partly cloudy conditions,” he said.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains are expected in some parts of the country. The Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin are likely to receive moderate rainfall, with counties such as Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, and Kakamega on alert for downpours.

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms may occasionally spread across several areas, Gikungu noted, adding that light rains may also occur in the mornings.

Residents are advised to stay informed on the weather patterns and take appropriate precautions to stay safe.
