Germany Denies Ruto’s 250,000 Job Claims for Kenyans

Published on

Germany has officially dismissed claims made by President William Ruto regarding a deal that would provide 250,000 job opportunities for Kenyans. During an interview with German broadcaster DW, President Ruto stated that a recent agreement between Kenya and Germany would create these jobs, sparking excitement among many Kenyans.

However, Germany’s Interior Ministry issued a statement refuting this claim. According to the ministry, no agreement was made to provide a specific number of job opportunities for Kenyans. “This information is clearly false,” the ministry said in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). “The agreement between Germany and Kenya does not include any numbers or quotas of skilled workers who will have the opportunity to work in Germany. All applicants must fulfil the strict requirements of the German Skilled Immigration Act.

This clarification followed widespread reports that Kenya had secured a significant employment deal during President Ruto’s two-day visit to Germany, which aimed to explore new job opportunities for Kenyans abroad. While Kenya’s State House confirmed that a deal had been struck between the two countries, it made no mention of the controversial 250,000 job figure that had been expected as part of the announcement.

The German Skilled Immigration Act allows foreign workers to apply for job opportunities in the country, but the process remains highly selective, with no predetermined quotas for specific nationalities.

The clarification by Germany has prompted further discussions about the exact nature of the agreements signed during President Ruto’s visit. While the deal represents an opportunity for Kenyan workers, it appears that the large-scale employment figures initially cited may have been misinterpreted.

As the situation develops, both governments are expected to release more details on the specifics of their cooperation in the coming weeks.
