Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has denied allegations that she was detained in the United Kingdom for allegedly attempting to smuggle Ksh679 million into the country. Rumours of the alleged incident surfaced online, accusing Ndeti of involvement in money laundering and causing a stir on social media platforms.
In a statement released on Sunday, Ndeti dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated, asserting that they were part of a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing her reputation and undermining her work in Machakos County. “My attention has been drawn to an online smear campaign designed and sponsored by my political detractors,” Ndeti said. “This campaign is aimed at dampening the impact of the transformative work we are doing in Machakos.“
The governor criticised the allegations as absurd and an insult to the intelligence of the people of Machakos and Kenya. She also added that the statement was demeaning and an insult to the intelligence of the people of Machakos and Kenya to imagine that she would smuggle hundreds of millions of shillings on her account.
Ndeti reassured her supporters about her family’s safety, confirming that neither she nor her family members were involved in any illegal activities or detained abroad. “I can confirm that my family and I are safe and sound and remain in good standing both at home and abroad,” she emphasized.
She also condemned those spreading the false claims, accusing them of defamation and misuse of electronic media. Ndeti warned that such misinformation could endanger her and her family’s safety. “Let the authors of this narrative be warned that should anything happen to any member of my family or myself, you shall be held personally responsible,” she stated.
Despite the controversy, Ndeti reaffirmed her commitment to delivering on her promises to the people of Machakos. She highlighted her administration’s achievements, including completing nearly 1,000 projects since August 2022 and achieving record revenue collection of Ksh1.7 billion in the fiscal year 2023/2024, the highest in the county’s history.
