Tanzanian singer and former TPF star Peter Msechu recently opened up about his weight loss journey after undergoing gastric bypass surgery.
Speaking during a Twitter Space on healthy living, Msechu shared that he has already lost 27 kg following the procedure.
For years, Msechu struggled with his weight, which at one point exceeded 150 kg. He revealed that his unhealthy eating habits, developed at a young age, contributed significantly to his weight gain.
He explained how he used to tell his parents that he would buy his own sacks of rice just to eat as much as he wanted.
“When I was young, I used to see eating large amounts of food as a valuable thing,” Msechu said. “But in the long run, this made me gain a lot of weight.”

Turning to gastric bypass surgery
In January 2023, Msechu underwent a gastric bypass surgery after initially trying an intragastric balloon procedure, which helped him lose 30 kg. However, after the balloon was removed, he regained his weight.
The gastric bypass surgery, which alters the digestive system to help with weight loss, was a significant step in his ongoing effort to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
Msechu candidly admitted that his poor eating habits took a toll on his health. He confessed to consuming three plates of rice and chips in a single meal and having a particular love for sugary foods. Over time, his unhealthy eating habits led to various health complications. He even mentioned feeling tempted to eat the same food his children were given, despite knowing the impact on his health.
Impact of Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is a lifesaver for many, especially those dealing with severe obesity. It works by reducing the size of the stomach and rerouting part of the digestive system, limiting food intake, and promoting weight loss.
Msechu’s surgery has helped him lose 27 kg so far, and he is hopeful that he can continue to shed weight and improve his health.
Msechu is not the only public figure to turn to surgery for weight loss. Other celebrities like Willis Raburu, Risper Faith, Wema Sepetu Kate, and Big Ted have also undergone similar procedures to manage their weight and improve their health.
By opening up about his journey, Msechu hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles to take action and prioritize their health.
