Nairobi cracks down on public urination and littering

Published on

Nairobi County has launched a crackdown on individuals urinating and littering in public spaces. In a night operation, at least 30 people were arrested for public urination in the city center.

Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria vowed to enforce stricter measures against those flouting sanitation laws. Offenders face fines of up to Sh10,000 or six months imprisonment, according to the Nairobi Public Nuisance Act of 2021.

The county is also targeting food vendors operating in unsanitary conditions to curb the spread of foodborne illnesses.

To address the root of the problem, the county plans to increase the number of public toilets and ensure they are accessible and affordable.

The crackdown has met with mixed reactions, with some residents applauding the move while others argue for more public toilets. Despite the challenges, the county government remains committed to improving the city’s hygiene and cleanliness.
