President William Ruto has been facing hefty criticism ever since his move to increase taxes imposed on Kenyans.

The move by the president expedited Kenyans’ decision to come up with hilarious nick names for the president.

The most popular one that made it to his ears was ‘Zakayo’.

In May 2023, the name Zakayo surfaced on social platforms in the wake of new tax proposals made by the Ruto-led administration.

They likened Ruto to Zacchaeus (Zakayo in Swahili), who climbed the Sycamore tree to see Jesus, according to the Bible.

Ng’ang’a shares his view on ‘Zakayo’

Pastor Ng’ang’a recently sang his song ‘Zakayo Shuka’ while at a crusade that saw Kenyans turn up in huge numbers.

While netizens seemed to enjoy it, Ng’ang’a has now come clean to detach the song from what most of them associate it with.

In his recent video, he calibrated that the song ‘Zakayo Shuka’ was actually recorded 18 years ago and that it wasn’t meant to hurt anyone.

”Nimeskia ati ma Gen Z wanaimba nyimbo zangu. Hio nyimbo mimi sikumaanisha Zakayo hio mnasema. Nilitoa wimbo hiyo almost 18 years ago. Nilitolea kwa kanisa hio nyimbo. Niko na album iko na nyimbo saba,” he started off.

Ng’ang’a however, continued to state that he has no say if it’s the right time for his song to grace the airwaves.

”Na kila wakati huwa naiimba. But I thank God kama wakati wake umefika wa kufanya jambo,” he stated.

Ruto on being referred to as ‘Zakayo’

After fathoming about his nick name, President Ruto said despite being called various names, he will stand by his firm decisions to put the country on the right path.

“I don’t mind people calling me names.  I will continue to do the right thing for our country irrespective of the names people call me including Zakayo,” Ruto said.

The Head of State added that when you do the right thing, your conscious is clear.
