Legendary ‘Black Panther’ actress Connie Chiume passes away

South Africa and the global film and television industry are mourning the loss of iconic actress Connie Chiume. The celebrated star passed away on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital. She was 72.

Known for her powerful performances and versatility, Chiume left an indelible mark on the entertainment landscape. Her career spanned decades, with notable roles in television series such as “Mohlolohadi,” “Yizo Yizo,” “Zone 14,” “Rhythm City,” “Housekeepers,” and “Grassroots.” She also made waves internationally with her appearance in the Marvel blockbuster “Black Panther” and more recently, in the hit series “Gomora.”

The Chiume family confirmed the tragic news, requesting privacy during this difficult time. Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues alike, celebrating Chiume’s immense talent and enduring legacy.

Actor Spaces, a platform honoring African cinema, expressed their deep sorrow and acknowledged Chiume’s significant contributions to the industry.

“Your remarkable contributions to our industry and powerful performances worldwide have left an everlasting imprint,” they wrote.

Fellow actress Kate Actress shared heartfelt condolences, describing Chiume as a beloved friend.

“NO! Rest in peace Mum Connie,” she wrote on Instagram. “You were deeply loved & appreciated.”

Chiume’s exceptional career was recognized with numerous awards, including Lifetime Achievement honors at the Royal Soapie Awards, SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas), and the Hollywood and African Prestigious Awards.

The passing of Connie Chiume is a profound loss to the entertainment world. Her legacy as a talented and inspiring actress will continue to shine for generations to come.
