Prison Officers stage nationwide ‘go slow’ over unpaid salary hike

The prison warders staged a go-slow on Thursday, protesting what they described as poor pay and unfulfilled promises by the government.

Servicemen and women anxiously anticipated receiving large pay checks after President William Ruto had earlier pledged to raise officers’ wages by at least Ksh. 2,000. However, that hope was dashed at the end of July.

“From this month on, we will be living up to our commitment to enhance the salary of our policemen and police officers in line with the commitment we made.

This month, the prison men and women will have their first salary increment instalment together with the other security agencies, as a commitment I made last year,” President Ruto said back then:.

Even so, they have still not received their salary hike as promised, and many are sharing their disappointments over the same.

Through a short, brief interview held with Citizen Digital, many prison officers opened up, disclosing how upset they were.

“Hatujapata kitu, mara wanasema circular haijatoka. Shida inaweza kuwa ni nini? Walitangaza mbele ya hiyo kamati ya wakubwa walikuwa wamehudhuria hapo ikulu.”

Constables at the lowest level were expected to get wage increases of up to Ksh. 2,000, while their National Police Service (NPS) counterparts continued to receive their allowances. The prison guards’ pay stubs from the prior month didn’t alter.

The situation has led to a go-slow, with the officers threatening to down tools if the government does not meet its end of the bargain.
