Police Seek 21-Day Detention of Boniface Mwangi

Published on

Kenyan police have filed a court application seeking a 21-day detention order for human rights activist Boniface Mwangi. The activist has been among the few renowned activists who have put their lives on the line to fight against injustice in the country. The authorities claim they need this time to investigate Mwangi over several alleged offenses.

Mwangi to be detained

According to court documents, Mwangi is accused of false publication, unlawful assembly, and creating a public disturbance. The police allege that on July 25, Mwangi and others blocked Koinange Street in Nairobi, distributing T-shirts and placards with inflammatory messages.

The activist is also accused of making social media posts claiming government involvement in extrajudicial killings, which the police say incited the public.

Time for investigations

To support their request for extended detention, the police argue that they need time to gather evidence, including identifying the source of a coffin and crosses used during the protest and determining who financed the event. The authorities have also seized Mwangi’s phone for forensic analysis to identify potential financiers.
