Kenya deploys more soldiers to Haiti in gang crackdown

Published on

Kenyan police officers, deployed as part of a UN-backed mission, patrolled the streets of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince in armored vehicles on Wednesday. This follows a state of emergency declaration by Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille targeting areas heavily controlled by gangs.

Conille announced a state of emergency encompassing 14 communes across Haiti’s west and central regions. The move aims to empower the authorities with additional resources to confront gang activity and restore order.

Conille authorized Haitian police, the national army, and the Kenyan contingent to launch operations in the designated zones. The ultimate goal, as outlined by the Prime Minister, is to systematically retake control of gang-infested areas.

Kenya Leads International Support

Kenya plays a pivotal role in the international effort to address Haiti’s security crisis. Following last year’s commitment to lead the UN-approved mission, Kenya has deployed 400 personnel so far, with promises to send more in the coming weeks.

The combined forces face a significant challenge in tackling the widespread gang control. The success of the mission will depend on effective collaboration between Haitian authorities and international partners.
