Judge David Majanja, a highly respected member of the Kenyan judiciary, passed away on Wednesday, July 10th while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

Justice Majanja served with distinction as a High Court judge since 2011, most recently stationed at the Milimani Civil Division. He was also a dedicated advocate for judicial reform, actively involved with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as a representative of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA).

First elected to the JSC in 2019, he was recently re-elected in May 2024. During his tenure, he played a key leadership role, chairing the Human Resource Management Committee and contributing to committees focused on audit, governance, and professional development.

Condolences messages

The judiciary and legal institutions were heavily saddened by the death of Majanja. He was hailed as a powerful intellect by the president.

President Ruto also shared his sincere condolences as he paid tribute to Majanja.

“His integrity and ability inspired the confidence of his colleagues, while his powerful intellect made him a trusted juridical voice. “It has been evident for long that although fairly experienced, Hon. Majanja was at the beginning of a long and illustrious career, and this fact makes his passing all the more tragic,” Ruto stated.

Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua followed suit in mourning the advocate, also praising him for being an icon in the judiciary. Gachagua recently lost her sister and laid her to rest a few days ago. The cause of Majanja’s death remains unclear.
