New lead in Tom Mboya Assassination as DCI probes 92-year-old’s allegations

Published on

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation into the claims of a 92-year-old man, Ndwiga Muruathika, who alleges involvement in the 1969 assassination of Kenyan icon Tom Mboya.

The probe follows a report in the Saturday Nation on July 6th, 2024, which detailed Muruathika’s story. Muruathika claims he was one of three men tasked with acquiring the murder weapon and surveilling Mboya.

A cold case re-visited

The assassination of Tom Mboya, a revered trade unionist, minister, and Pan-Africanist leader, remains one of Kenya’s most enduring mysteries. Shot in Nairobi on July 5th, 1969, the case has never been fully resolved, despite the initial conviction of one suspect – Isaac Nahashon Njenga Njoroge.

New revelations

Muruathika’s claims offer a potentially explosive twist in the narrative. He alleges Mboya’s political ambitions and perceived threat to the Mau Mau movement fueled the assassination plot. He further claims his role involved acquiring the weapon and creating an alibi.

DCI Takes Action

The DCI, in a statement on social media, confirmed the investigation and promised “necessary action” upon completion. This development has reignited public interest in the Mboya case, potentially leading to long-awaited answers.

Unanswered Questions

Muruathika’s story raises several questions. Who were the “they” who allegedly planned the killing? Can his claims be verified? The DCI’s investigation will hopefully shed light on these critical aspects and potentially bring closure to this historic event.
