Kenyans are now required to separate their household waste into organic and non-organic bins starting today, July 8th. This is according to the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) which is enforcing a regulation outlined in the Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022.
A 90-day grace period following the announcement in October 2023 has ended. Kenyans must now sort their trash and use properly labeled and color-coded bins or bags for collection. Waste collectors are obligated to maintain this separation during transport to designated processing facilities.

NEMA is also tightening its grip on the ban on plastic garbage bags. Effective today, only biodegradable bags can be used by individuals and waste collection companies. The ban, originally enacted in 2017, covered all plastic carrier bags including those used for garbage.
The regulations apply to county governments, private organizations, and anyone who provides waste management facilities. These entities are responsible for supplying biodegradable trash bags to their clients.
Failure to comply can result in a fine of Ksh 20,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
This enforcement initiative is part of NEMA’s plan to ensure Kenya meets international environmental sustainability standards.
