The proposed salary increment on members of parliament has outraged a larger section of netizens and MPs, who believe that it is uncouth for it to come at a time like this.

Shortly after withdrawing the finance bill, president Ruto promised to look into ways of increasing the country’s revenue.

One of the ways he proposed was to reduce salaries of members of parliament, including his own.

He would also do away with the proposed multi-million office of the first lady.

Ironically, the salaries are being increased rather than being decreased.

A couple of the members of parliament declined to take the salary increment.

Babu Owino sympathized with jobless Kenyans in his rejection statement

“MPs and other state officers should not be added even a coin. “It’s sad to increase salary while Kenyans have no jobs, Kenyans have no capital to start businesses, Kenyans have no money to pay school fees, No money for medication. Say no to salary increments,” Babu Owino wrote.

Langata MP Jalang’o followed suit and explained that it is so peculiar to add salaries at a time of crisis.

“Some things almost look like a setup. We are in a crisis, and the SRC is proposing an increment of Ksh14,000. Do they want us to be beaten up so that they can be happy? I don’t want that,” Jalang’o stated.

Millicent Omanga joined the conversation and requested the salaries to be reduced rather than increased.

”It’s a betrayal to Kenyans for salaries & other benefits of state officers to be increased at this point in time when there’s agitation for the same to be reduced. We can’t always take Kenyans for fools. Reduce, not increase. That’s what Kenyans are demanding!,” she wrote on X
