Demonstrators use caskets to block roads in Nairobi CBD

Protests continue over a finance bill that would raise the cost of living, even after the president said he would not sign it in the wake of the storming of parliament last week. The narrative is now ‘ruto must go’ alongside his party memebers.

Anti-government protestors in the CBD have decided to take the demonstrations a notch higher today.

The protestors have decided to use empty coffins to block various roads in the CBD, making it hard for commuters to access some of the areas. Burning of tyres and use of large stones has been the main form of blockage that has been used in the recent past. But a section of protestors have decided to use caskets.

In Nairobi, authorities used tear gas to disperse anti-government demonstrations. Businesses shut down preemptively to avoid looting, while the major highway connecting Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city, was blocked by protesters who set up bonfires.

The president has offered to have dialogue with Kenyan youth and has promised budget cuts on travel and hospitality for his office in line with some protesters’ demands. As unemployment remains high and prices rise, there has been outrage over the luxurious lives of the president and other senior officials.
