Kenyans across the country participated in a unique protest on Saturday night. In what was dubbed “7 Days of Rage,” Kenyans observed a 10-minute silence starting at midnight in entertainment establishments. This silence served as a protest against the Finance Bill and honored those who died in previous protests.
The call to action spread widely on social media. As the clock struck midnight, music stopped playing in bars and clubs nationwide. Patrons replaced music with the Kenyan national anthem, patriotic songs, and chants against the Finance Bill.
Videos captured the moment of transition from partying to protest. DJs played a key role, adhering to the call and setting the tone for the 10-minute demonstration.
In Nairobi, revelers at Cavalli sang Eric Wainaina’s patriotic song “Daima” during the silent protest. In Eldoret, President William Ruto’s hometown, chants of “Ruto Must Go” erupted at Tamasha club. At Quiver Lounge in Kilimani, Nairobi, Juliani’s song “Utawala” became the anthem as patrons voiced their opposition to government policies.
The movement extended beyond major cities. A video from a Karatina pub showed patrons standing up in unison at midnight and chanting “Reject Finance Bill.” Similar scenes unfolded in counties across Kenya, including Nanyuki, Nakuru, Machakos, Mombasa, Meru, and Nyeri. This nationwide participation highlighted the widespread discontent with the Finance Bill.
