“We are not backing down!” Kenyans reject Finance Bill despite proposed ‘favorable’ changes

Published on

Kenyans online have joined in protesting against the Finance Bill 2024 following the extra burden it will put on common citizen (mwanainchi).

The protests come at a time when majority of Kenyan MPs openly committed to passing it in their favor – forgetting the country not only struggles from unemployment but is poverty stricken from….once again….unemployment and lack of opportunities to make ends meet.

Taxes Kenyans have refused to support

According to the proposed Finance Bill the government was aiming at taxing sanitary towels despite knowing of regions in the country with young women; who cannot afford them at the moment even without involving the current Finance Bill.

Car owners have also been targeted with vehicle tax which will also affect Matatu, cabs and other means of road transportation hence trickling down to the consumers…Kenyans.

The 16% tax on Bread which has now been lifted was also one of the main reasons Kenyans participated on the ongoing online and street protests.

With the government also taxing natural oils like Butter, Coconut oil, Ghee among others has left many feeling unsafe from their own government as it plans to make healthy living more expensive, where else it should be on the forefront pushing for a healthier lifestyle for it’s citizens.

Tax on calls, Money transfer and internet is also another reason why Kenyans refuse the Finance Bill 2024 seeing that with just limited telecom providers, life is already expensive.

With the housing Bill already forced down their throats, Kenyans have refused to continue making money for the state since they cannot afford to support themselves with the current high cost of living.
