Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kithure Kindiki, has declared Monday, June 17th, 2024, a public holiday to mark Eid al-Adha, a major Islamic celebration.
A Day of Sacrifice and Sharing
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is a significant holiday for Muslims worldwide. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail (Ishmael), as an act of obedience to God’s command.
Falling on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, one of the Five Pillars of Islam. While the pilgrimage is for those who are physically and financially able, Eid al-Adha is a global celebration.

Sharing the Blessings
Central to Eid al-Adha is the act of sacrifice, known as Qurbani. Muslims who can afford to do so sacrifice a livestock animal, with the meat divided into three parts:
One-third is given to the poor and needy, one-third is shared with friends and neighbors, One-third is kept by the family.
This tradition reflects the Islamic values of generosity and community spirit.
