Tragedy struck Mount Everest as Kenyan climber, Cheruiyot Kirui, was found deceased near the summit. The fate of his Sherpa guide, Nawang Sherpa, remains unknown, according to officials at Everest Base Camp.
Kirui, who attempted the summit without supplemental oxygen, went missing from the Bishop Rock area.
Reports indicate Nawang informed base camp that Kirui refused to descend, declined bottled oxygen, and exhibited unusual behavior.
Rescue efforts are underway with climbers on the current summit push searching for Nawang. This follows the deaths of two other climbers earlier this week. British climber Daniel Paul Peterson and Nepali Sherpa Pas Tenji Sherpa fell near the Hillary Step after a section of the route collapsed. Additionally, Romanian climber Gabriel Tabara was found deceased in his tent at Camp III on Tuesday.
