Nigerian female artist Ayra Starr has shared the inspiration behind her upcoming album.
Speaking via an interview with Way Up With Angela Yee, she revealed that she chose to settle on the name that’s on her new upcoming album ‘The Year I Turned 21’ because she wanted to keep up with the numbers since her last album was 19 and she thought of keeping the consistency with the numbers.
“My first album was 19 and dangerous. I was like, Let’s do the numbers. Then, I had a list of numbers. It will be good to have something 21 and… I sent it to my team because I kept suggesting numbers, and Rema was like, Let’s do it because he suggested ‘The year I turned 21,” Ayra Starr shared.
She finally decided to go with the title, thanks to Rema, who suggested the name for her. Some of her tracks were inspired by her visit out of her own country especially after turning 21, one of the tracks is ‘Commas’.
Her upcoming album has a total of 15 tracks; initially, there were 14, but she thought of adding one because the song went platinum in Spain and has over 100 million views on YouTube.
Ayra Starr is hyped for turning 21, not just because she has a new album coming but also because she will now be allowed to access and do things she couldn’t do when she was in the States, especially in the UK.

Reason Behind naming her Past Album 19 & Dangerous
The artist, who is also the owner of the ‘Bloody Samaritan’ track, did also come clean on why she named her last album 19 and dangerous, saying it was all because she felt that was her year.
“At 19, it was my time because I had a lot to prove, and since I was a child, I used to brag about how powerful I was and that I was going to be a superstar. When I had this album, I had this power point presentation: 19 is dangerous. I want to be a celestial being. I simply wanted to flex on people.”
Ayra Starr’s Biggest Fear
The ‘Rush’ hitmaker also openly talked about her biggest fears when performing for an audience on stage as an artist, hinting that she doesn’t like when someone throws stuff at her, just the way some artists have fallen victim to such acts. One of them was Cardi B, who was performing on stage, and out of nowhere someone threw something at her.
According to Ayra Starr, she’ll track you down and find you and deal with you at that very time while performing on stage.
“That’s like one of my greatest fears if someone does that for me. I’ll actually throw it back to the fan on stage.”
