Kenya Power is urging all customers who rely on prepaid meters for electricity and water to take action before November 24th, 2024. The metering software currently in use is reaching its expiration date, and meters will no longer accept new tokens after this deadline.
The firm’s manager for Coast region, Mr. Phineas Matarete, emphasized the urgency of the situation, that failure to reset and update the software will result in consumers being unable to use newly purchased tokens.
”To ensure functioning of all the meters after this date, it is necessary to perform token identifier(TID) memory from zero. This will be done through the use of a key change token (KCT) which is a set of two-20 digit numbes that is input into a meter when the meter’s functionality needs to be reconfigured or changedd, Mr. Marete added.
What You Need to Do
There’s no need to physically replace your meter! Kenya Power will be performing a free software update to ensure continued functionality. You’ll receive a special code to be entered into your meter to complete the process.
Mr. Marete cautioned that tokens purchased but not used before the deadline will become invalid. The developments were disclosed during a media engagement workshop held at the Mombasa Beach Hotel.
”Once the rollover is complete the prepaid meter will not accept old tokens. It is therefore very critical to carry out the rollover smoothly to avoid disruptions because when it’s done, meters will reject tokens from authorised vendors, Mr Matete said.
Spreading the Word
Many Kenyans haven’t heard about this update! Kenya Power is working on a mass education campaign, but you can help by sharing this information with friends and family who use prepaid meters.
