Then you grow up and realize that it’s more about trying to fit your bills into your salary, trying to slay on a budget, and coming up with excuses about why you can’t go out every weekend.

Walk out of any relationship that’s not building you up.

The best thing about growing up has to be that you finally realize that ‘kuvumilia’ is overrated. The quality of a relationship is not determined by how long it lasts.

The real test is knowing when enough is enough and having the courage to walk away from that man you’ve been dreaming of growing old with. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? But don’t resort to this yet unless, otherwise, it is a toxic relationship. I believe some things can be worked out, but that shouldn’t be an excuse to forgive a cheating or lying partner. Saying no is therefore difficult for black women. You will need to learn how to say yes to everything, from organizing all of your friends’ birthday surprises to serving as the chamas’ treasurer.

Asking yourself what you are accepting every time you turn someone down is a smart place to start. Saying no to hosting that party, for example, is a way to say yes to some much-needed alone time for self-care.
