In a post on her social media accounts, Ciru acknowledged that she was one of the employees affected by a recent downsizing that occurred at the global media organization, “I was laid off, in other words, I was retrenched. I was working at this large international media house for 5 years and last year they let the large staff know that they wanted to take a different direction and wanted to do a digital-first approach and as a result some roles with be made redundant. Right now I’m an under-employed journalist.”

She proceeded to explain that her intention in sharing her story was to offer encouragement to individuals who may be facing similar circumstances.

Ms. Muriuki additionally recognized that she would be making certain adjustments in her life to adapt to the new situation.

“I have wanted to discuss this because there seems to be a stigma attached to admitting that you have lost your job. These are challenging economic times… but there is life beyond losing full-time employment. I know individuals who have never had traditional employment and yet they are flourishing,” expressed Ciru.

On future plans, she said she planned to try out content creation, “I have been retrenched and I’m not throwing myself fully into content creation but I hope to thrive there as well.”
