Tensions high as more bodies are recovered in Mukuru kwa Njenga

Published on

Tensions escalated in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums on Sunday as residents discovered two additional bodies in an abandoned quarry. The discovery ignited a fierce confrontation with police after locals accused authorities of underreporting the death toll.

The horrific incidence has roped in numerous reactions from netizens, who have greatly sympathized with the families of those who lost their lives.

Police intervene

As volunteers joined residents in the search, the situation quickly devolved into chaos. Residents erected barricades and clashed with police who responded with tear gas and live ammunition. The ensuing standoff left at least two people injured: Abel Muli, shot in the back, and Cynthia Khisa, hit by a tear gas canister. Both were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

The public outcry over the incident was swift and intense. Many questioned the police’s tactics, arguing that they should have collaborated with residents instead of dispersing them. Others expressed disbelief at the authorities’ alleged attempts to downplay the scale of the tragedy.

A rise of insecurity

The grisly discovery has been linked to the Shakahola massacre, which saw hundreds of bodies being recovered after a long while.

Mukuru’s incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about the safety and security of residents. As investigations into the deaths continue, pressure mounts on authorities to provide answers and address the growing anger and fear among the population.
