Speaking to one of the press members, Shakira clarified on why she stood up to the police then saying it was after having been a victim of one of those who were harassed the previous day by the Kenyan police officers.
“On the first day I was arrested, I wouldn’t even use the term arrested; I was ambushed by plain clothes officers; they threw me into a vehicle, harassed me, beat me, and took me to the central police station, where I was detained among other protestors until 8 p.m.” Shakira said.
It was actually out of experience and the rage that filled her, which propelled her to stand up and speak up for herself so that what happened to her earlier does not repeat itself.
“I did not understand why the people’s demands had to be made with such brutality, and in my opinion, we did not deserve to experience what we were experiencing.
So I was like, if this moment ever happens to me again, I have to be able to speak up for myself, and it so happens that people were there to film. To be honest, I was scared, but my anger and frustrations persisted in my fear at that moment.” Shakira shared.
Shakira’s photos and videos have been making the rounds online, showing how courageously she stood up to a police officer, something that has been commended by the public at large.
