Main Story:

The Senate Public Investments and Special Funds Committee has raised alarm over suspicious financial dealings in Trans Nzoia County, where senior officials reportedly accessed public funds through unsecured loans in violation of laid-down procedures.

According to findings presented to the committee, more than Ksh.30 million was disbursed under the County Staff Loan and Mortgage Scheme without collateral, audit trails, or legal compliance. Lawmakers say the funds were allocated to high-ranking officials who bypassed standard vetting and approval processes.

Committee members expressed shock at the blatant abuse, calling it a clear case of financial mismanagement and personal enrichment at the expense of county residents. “This scheme was never meant to be a personal cash cow,” one senator remarked during the session.

The committee has now directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to immediately step in and investigate. They also want the county government to recover all funds disbursed irregularly and hold responsible individuals accountable.

As the scandal unfolds, the Trans Nzoia County leadership has yet to issue a formal statement. However, pressure is mounting for the Governor to explain how such a significant breach of accountability occurred under their watch.
