Safaricom Announces Change in M-Pesa Airtime Purchase Limit

Published on

In a move aimed at increasing accessibility and flexibility, Safaricom has announced a significant change to its M-Pesa airtime purchase limit. As of September 17, 2024, the minimum amount for buying airtime via M-Pesa has been reduced from Ksh5 to just Ksh1.

Ceo Safaricom

Safaricom revealed this update through a message to its customers, stating, “Hata shilingi ni pesa! Sasa unaweza kununua Safaricom airtime ya kuanzia shilingi moja ukitumia M-Pesa. Angalia M-Pesa balance yako na ujaribu kununua leo.” In addition, this translates to, “Even a shilling is money! You can now purchase Safaricom airtime starting from just one shilling using M-Pesa. Check your M-Pesa balance and try buying today.”

The company believes this change will offer greater flexibility to users, making it easier for all customers, including low-spenders, to stay connected.

This new policy comes shortly after Safaricom’s announcement regarding changes to its reverse call service. On August 19, 2024, Safaricom revealed that customers would now be charged Ksh0.50 for the third reverse call request made in a single day. The company assured that there would be no additional charges for the rest of the day’s reverse calls.

Customer Reactions

The adjustment to the reverse call service has been met with mixed reactions from Safaricom’s users. Some expressed frustration over the additional cost, while others have questioned the necessity of the fee.

Safaricom’s new KSH1 airtime option applies across all tariffs. To begin with, customers can dial the USSD code *334# and follow the prompts to purchase this low-value airtime. Additionally, this change allows users to buy airtime at a lower cost without altering their existing tariff rates.

Handling Airtime Reversals

For customers who mistakenly purchase airtime from M-Pesa and need to reverse the transaction, Safaricom provides a straightforward process. Specifically, if customers have already used part of the airtime, they can reverse the transaction by topping up the used amount to match the original sum and sending the transaction message to 456. Furthermore, the company assures customers that the system processes the reversal immediately.

Safaricom’s latest changes to the M-Pesa airtime purchase limit and reverse call service highlight the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to customer needs and regulatory requirements. Moreover, with the new KSH1 airtime option and clear procedures for handling mistaken airtime purchases, Safaricom aims to enhance user convenience and satisfaction.
