Venue Shift Confirmed

Kenyans in Kisumu who were preparing to view the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will now head to a different venue. County officials have announced that the event, initially planned for Moi Stadium, will instead take place at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo.

Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo confirmed the change after inspecting the new site, saying the move followed high-level discussions by the funeral organising committee chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Leparmorijo noted that the decision was informed by security concerns and the need to ensure smooth movement of mourners. “There are a few cases of muggings and extortion within our city. That cannot be allowed in law because it’s criminal,” he said, warning against any attempts to disrupt the solemn occasion.

He added that security personnel have been deployed around Kisumu to maintain order, and urged residents to mourn peacefully. “We request that all our mourners just do it in a peaceful way and observe the law to the letter,” he emphasized.

Organised Farewell

The relocation also aims to accommodate the large number of mourners expected to attend Raila’s viewing, given his deep roots in the region. Authorities say Jomo Kenyatta Stadium offers better space, parking, and security management to handle the anticipated crowds.

The Kisumu viewing will be among several national events planned ahead of Raila’s burial in Bondo, where his family will hold a private ceremony following a State funeral.
